“They’re overrated” – Former World Cup winner hits out at quality of Real Madrid’s squad while making claim about Kylian Mbappe

Former World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry has claimed that the Kylian Mbappe-led Real Madrid squad lacks quality. He believes that the plays are overrated and many are not qualified to be at the club.

Speaking on Jerome Rothen’s podcast, Dugarry said Real Madrid’s problems are not because of Mbappe, but the Frenchman’s teammates. He said quality was the key reason he did not get many matches at Barcelona, hinting that the players at Santiago Bernabeu were getting minutes despite not being good enough. He said (via Tribal Football):

“I find it quite surprising that Real Madrid’s problems are solely due to Kylian Mbappe. At some point, we have to stop exaggerating. If the Spanish don’t want him anymore, they should send him back. Maybe he’ll leave and make someone else happy, I don’t know.”

“But I find it quite surprising, honestly. I think there are too many players at this Real Madrid who aren’t Madrid players. They’re overrated, I’m sorry. I’ve also had the opportunity to play for big clubs. At Barcelona, I didn’t wear the shirt much, and there’s a reason for that too…”

Dugarry went to name Edouardo Camavinga, Arda Guler, Federico Valverde, Raul Asensio and Aurelien Tchouaméni as the players who are not at the level Los Blancos need and said:

“These are clubs that aspire to stars, they’re the best, and I think there are players who aren’t up to par. They’ve been there a long time, I’m thinking of (Eduardo) Camavinga, (Arda) Güler, (Fede) Valverde, (Aurelien) Tchouaméni… (Raul) Asensio , who came out of nowhere and became a starter because there were a lot of injuries. He proved to be a good player, but he’s not a Real Madrid centre-back.”

Kylian Mbappe joined Los Blancos in 2024 after running down his contract at PSG.

Christophe Dugarry slams Kylian Mbappe’s Real Madrid teammate

Christophe Dugarry also named David Alaba as another player who should not be at the club. He claimed that the defender has been injured for too long, and it was a surprise that the club had not parted ways with the former Bayern Munich star.

“Alaba is injured and only plays one week every three months; he’s not at that level. You can’t be at a club like this for two, three, or four years and always play at the same level, with one good game, one mediocre game, one good game here, one bad game there… There are too many inconsistent players.”

Kylian Mbappe has been in red-hot form for Los Blancos this season, scoring 36 goals in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
