When does A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms take place? Timeline of the Game of Thrones spinoff, explained

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a new installment in George R. Martin’s world and brings his stories back to a less chaotic area of Westeros. Moving from the dragon fire and prophetic tales of the past, viewers experience dusty roads and tourney fields, focusing on the everyday struggles of average citizens.

The Hedge Knight is the first story in Martin’s Dunk and Egg Novellas, and is what inspired the making of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The timeframe is set around 209 A.C., nearly 100 years before Game of Thrones and several decades after House of the Dragon. Although the Iron Throne is still occupied, the Targaryens have lost their dragons, and magical beings have faded away into obscurity.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place about 209 AC (After Aegon’s Conquest). This is approximately 90 – 100 years before what will eventually come to pass in Game of Thrones (297 AC) and somewhere around 75 – 80 years after the events of House of the Dragon, which ends with the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons (131 AC).

As for the timeline, it is a period of relative political stability after the Blackfyre Rebellion, which occurred approximately 13 years before the story begins.

As co-creator Ira Parker said during the show’s development process, the story does not include any currently-active magic elements, instead keeping with Martin’s more-or-less ‘grounded’ tone from his Dunk and Egg novellas.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on October 5, 2025, co-creator Parker stated:

“Nobody’s thinking about magic. This could basically be 14th century Britain. This is hard nose, grind it out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch. It’s a wonderful place to be. We are ground up in this series, we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens.”

All about the Game of Thrones spinoff: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the story of a hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall, who is considered humble due to his lack of wealth and questionable parentage. He is traveling with a squire called Egg, whose true identity is Prince Aegon Targaryen, the son of the previous king.

Along the way, Duncan finds himself accompanied by a stubborn young boy called Egg, portrayed by Dexter Sol Ansell, who refuses to leave him alone and eventually convinces him that he should be his squire. They find themselves in the midst of powerful nobles, including those from the Targaryen and Baratheon families.

They get sucked into a serious conflict between Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen and Ashford, after standing up for an act of cruelty. This escalates into the rather rare and dangerous Trial of Seven, which involves prominent figures such as Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen and Ser Lyonel Baratheon.

In the interview, Parker also stated that A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms was purposely created to have a completely different feel from both Game of Thrones and House Of The Dragon, with major changes, including eliminating the standard opening titles. Every choice made by the creative team was a product of Ser Duncan The Tall’s personality, as it is described as “plain” and “simple”.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is available to stream on HBO Max.
